Foreword
The third symposium held at the Art Gallery of New South Wales from 1 – 3 April 2004 explored the theme of collaboration and connections. The interrelationships between the object and those who connect with it, whether artist, curator, librarian, archivist, photographer, scientist, historian, papermaker, framer or conservator, expands the viewer’s understanding by investigation and interpretation brought through their various disciplines. Conservators not only endeavour to preserve objects from the past but are attempting to capture transient electronic knowledge. The speed of technological change produces new challenges for us all as the profession becomes less tactile and more theoretical. Traditional and contemporary methods of recording information and their preservation through digitisation are some of the areas discussed in the papers. Paper, books and photographic materials and, for the first time, conservation framing as a special interest group, raised pertinent issues and brought another dimension to our profession.
I would like to thank Ian Kiernan AO for opening the Sydney Symposium and our keynote speaker, artist Bea Maddock AM, as well as all the other speakers for sharing their passions and projects. In particular I thank the committee who committed their expertise, energy and goodwill, ensuring we all had an enjoyable and instructive time.
Rose Peel, Convenor
