I did not know David well, but our various encounters over the years were memorable most notably for his great generosity of spirit.
He had an extraordinary enthusiasm for tackling the challenges that conservation projects regularly throw at conservators. He clearly delighted in working through solutions, informed by his deep technical knowledge and innovative thinking.
David also got the value of international collaborations and the fact that his death was acknowledged first by AIC reflects what an influence he had in the US, and more widely outside Australia.
We are the poorer for his loss.
