Abstract

As museum collections steadily increase in size and value, and collections management costs escalate, there is a corresponding challenge for those involved with collection management to review current practice, and examine emerging ideas. Conservators, because of their intimate knowledge of objects and their needs, are ideally positioned to apply some thought to these challenges. This paper examines some of the emerging ideas about the sustainability of collections into the future, and new frameworks for managing them. The paper also examines the sustainability of conservation practice, using recent experience of the National Museum of Australia as a case study.
