Abstract

A recent exhibition of Indian miniature paintings, Intimate Encounters, at the Art Gallery of New South Wales (AGNSW), provided an opportunity for conservators at the AGNSW to review approaches to the treatment and display of Indian miniatures through research and consultation with colleagues in a number of Australian and European cultural institutions. The exhibition also provided an opportunity to look at the development of margin painting within the ateliers of the Mughal and Hindu Rajput schools of Indian miniature painting. The technique subsequently became an integral part of Indian miniature painting, a work not considered complete unless surrounded by some type of margin design.
