The PHOTON SIG was started to promote the conservation of photographic materials in Australia, an area distinct from other conservation expertise. It provides training and the sharing of knowledge for conservators with expertise and interest in the history and conservation of photographs and film. Professionals from other areas such as archivists, curators, historical process practitioners and book and paper conservators are also members. The aim of the group is to connect people with similar interests to share valuable knowledge, and to provide ongoing training and professional development opportunities that are otherwise unavailable in Australia.

Convenors
Lydia Egunnike trained in paper and photographic conservation in the UK. After several years working in UK labs, she managed the Conservation Unit at the State Library of QLD from 1998 to end of 2011. During this time, she took leave to complete a research fellowship in photograph conservation in the USA. Lydia worked as a Museum Development Officer for Queensland Museum for 9 years before setting up her own conservation practice in mid 2020.

Pip Morrison trained in paper conservation in Canberra in the late 90s, and then in photograph conservation with a 2 year research fellowship in the USA. She returned to Australia to work as the photograph conservator at the NGV for nearly 20 years, and now has her own private business in Melbourne.

Events
The Photon SIG traditionally holds a Symposium in conjunction with the Book and Paper SIG every two years. It also organises in person and online talks and practical workshops. These events provide sharing of experiences and knowledge on specific areas of expertise. Please contact the convenors with any ideas for future events.
