Nanocellulose in Art Conservation – Remy Dreyfuss-Deseigne – NZCCM Workshop at Te Papa Tongarewa, Wellington
In October 2025, Wendi Powell was fortunate enough to attend a two-day in-person workshop with Remy Dreyfuss-Deseigne organised through the NZCCM regarding Nanocellulose films and gels and their use in conservation. This intensive workshop offered participants lectures about the hands-on experience using various Nanocellulose films and gels; the making of MFC films, CNC films, and Nanocomposites, and their application on various materials (translucent and transparent supports, various papers, and even canvas). In addition, participants gained a deeper understanding of Nanocellulose (types, composition, manufactures, etc) through lectures and group discussions.
Approaches to Preserving Papermaking in Asia
In 2025, Kimberley Chung had the opportunity to participate in a Japanese washi-making tour and paper symposium in China. Each experience offered distinct perspectives on papermaking traditions and practices, yet both revealed a shared commitment to preserving papermaking as an intangible cultural craft through the careful use of local resources and knowledge systems. This presentation explores the contrast between the highly individual practices of Japanese washi masters and the more collective approach of the Chinese papermaking industry. Both models work toward a common goal: safeguarding papermaking traditions for future generations of makers and users.
Presentations will be approximately 15 minutes each, followed by discussion and audience questions.
