In Conversation with Creative Technologist Mark Hellar

As cultural heritage increasingly encompasses evolving technologies, rapidly obsolete systems, and ephemeral digital practices, time-based and digital conservation professionals are collaborating across a broad range of disciplines to support preservation, access, and re-use.

Working at the intersection of art, computer science, and design, creative technologists play a critical role in developing innovative tools, digital access platforms, and iterative prototypes that enable greater engagement with, and sustainability of, digital collections across the GLAM sector.

In this online session, Mark Hellar will share perspectives from his current work across museums, public art, software, and experimental technologies, offering insights into the diverse roles creative technologists play within the cultural sector and how they also collaborate with a diverse range of practitioners including time-based conservators.

Mark Hellar is a technology consultant and owner of Hellar Studios LLC, specialising in digital media and software-based solutions for multimedia artists and collecting institutions. He has contributed to new media conservation initiatives at SFMOMA, MoMA, and the Guggenheim Museum, with a focus on software-based artworks.

Join Mark Hellar for a presentation and discussion on technology, preservation and collaborative practices with AICCM’s Time-based and Digital Special Interest Group.
