The conventional tenets of museums presuppose that artworks are frozen in an original and static display mode after they become museum objects. However, the notions of material integrity, authenticity, and single authorship often do not align with the variable and ephemeral nature of contemporary art.

Using the enactment of Allow Me to Introduce Myself by the Singaporean artist Ezzam Rahman as an example, this talk aims to explore the concepts of “iterations” and “versions” in the context of performance art and foreground performance reactivation as a foundational artistic, curatorial, and conservation practice.

This presentation takes the form of a conversation between artist Ezzam Rahman and contemporary art conservator Fabiola Rocco. We will discuss matters of care when the primary site of conservation is the human body and explore the generative potential of performance art to dynamically reframe the role of museums.

Speakers

Fabiola Rocco is a contemporary art conservator currently pursuing a PhD at the Robert Cripps Institute for Cultural Conservation at the University of Melbourne. In the framework of her PhD research, Fabiola is investigating decolonized forms of conservation for live art, with a specific focus on Southeast Asian artists. Prior to this appointment, Fabiola served as Conservator, Contemporary Art at the Singapore Art Museum (SAM) and as Associate Conservator, Variable Media Art at M+ in Hong Kong. Fabiola holds a master’s degree in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage from the University of Turin, Italy.

Ezzam Rahman is a multi-disciplinary artist known for his interest in the body and the use of common, easily accessible, yet unconventional media. Working across sculpture, installation, digital media, and performance, he creates works that are often autobiographical, time-based, and ephemeral, aiming to pique viewers’ thoughts on the themes of body politics, identity, impermanence, traces, and abjection.

Alongside his artistic practice, Ezzam is currently an adjunct lecturer in LASALLE College of the arts and Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, University of The Arts Singapore and Nanyang Institute of Management, Canterbury Christ Church University, UK. He holds a Master of Arts, Fine Arts from Goldsmiths’ College, University of London through LASALLE College of the Arts.
