More than Materials: Collaborative Approaches in Cultural Heritage Conservation

This year’s conference marks an important milestone in AICCM’s commitment to building a stronger and more culturally informed conservation practice and to delivering on actions in our Reconciliation Action Plan.

AICCM has invited Caroline (Briggs) Martin – a Sovereign Boonwurrung and Wemba Wemba Woman and a leading advocate for the recognition and amplification of First Nations voices and transforming systems for lasting change – to lead and co-curate this event.

This co-curated program will build cultural awareness, competency and capability as well as develop networks between the AICCM and First Nations organisations, individuals and communities. It is a groundbreaking event that you do not want to miss!

We have presentations from Australian as well as international members and colleagues, and speakers joining us from Canada, Europe, UK, USA and NZ. This is an incredible networking and learning opportunity for us to connect as a global profession.

The program also includes a two-hour workshop with Shevaun Wright, Senior Solicitor with Terrie Janke and Company, who will guide us through a deeper understanding of Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property and Data Governance as it relates to conservation of cultural heritage. This workshop will include case studies and a panel led by artist Archie Moore on the conservation and care of his award-winning artwork kith and kin, which will be on display at QAGOMA.

While we finalise the program, a presentation listing is available on the conference website.

In-person registration includes morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea, plus two catered social functions on Wednesday and Thursday nights and access to workshops and tours on the day preceding the conference, Tuesday 11 November. It’s great value!

We would love members to promote the conference to colleagues—and not just to fellow conservators. Please invite others you work with to join our conversations so we can grow and develop together. Virtual registration is a really affordable and accessible way for others to join us.

The conference also aligns to several strategic goals from AICCM’s new 2025–2028 plan including First Nations leadership, delivering professional development training to our members, building wider sector networks, making the conference accessible and building a digital resource hub.

For example, this event will be available virtually and is the first AICCM National Conference to be recorded. Presentations, including digital posters, will be archived and accessible on the AICCM website to registered delegates.

We would also appreciate assistance through sponsorship or fundraising opportunities to support our First Nations partners, speakers and other guests to participate. If you have sponsorship ideas or would like to make a donation, please contact secretariat@aiccm.org.au

This conference is an important milestone for AICCM. We encourage you to get involved. Attend either online or in person so we can develop a strong and sustainable profession together.
