A Monumental Frame and Treatment: The Return of the Frame to The Pilgrim Fathers
Relegated to the storage area known as “the graveyard” for many years, the conservation of the massive frame for The Pilgrim Fathers: Departure of a Puritan family for New England by Charles Cope, 1856, was a major project for the team at the National Gallery of Victoria. The treatment included extensive re-creation of missing parts, cleaning the discoloured original glue coating (while retaining the coating) using Nanorestore Gel® Peggy 5 & 6, and devising a sympathetic method of re-joining the frame members to allow ease of assembly/disassembly. Holly previously presented this talk at the FRAME: Concept, History and Conservation Symposium 3 in Hobart in February this year.
Holly is Senior Conservator of Frames & Furniture at the National Gallery of Victoria. Her work encompasses a range of artworks in the NGV collection, from decorative arts to contemporary design, with a particular focus on picture frames conservation and research.
Presentation 2: Mar Cruz, Digital and Time Based Media Conservator
The challenges of preserving time-based artworks at the Heritage Conservation Centre, Singapore
This talk addresses the issues faced when working with the Heritage Conservation Centre in the conservation of its Time-Based Media collection, which has unique needs such as changes in how an artwork is installed over time, and the artist’s own imperfect knoweldge of their artworks. In addition, the TBM collection is a very small subset of a larger collection that consists of more ‘traditional’ artworks such as paper, paintings and sculptural objects. As such, HCC’s conservation processes have been tailored to best suit their needs to the potential detriment of the TBM artwork’s own needs.
Mar was the Digital and Time Based Media Conservator at Singapore’s Heritage Conservation Centre, a role that included setting up HCC’s time based media lab, creating TBM-specific workflows and managing the collection. Prior to this, he was a digital preservation technician at ACMI, where he undertook the analysis and preservation of the collection.
