Although extensive Oddy testing data exists, stemming from institutions in the UK, Europe and the United States, Australia operates in a distinct geographic, climatic and institutional context. Differences in environmental conditions, material supply chains and cultural infrastructure make locally generated testing essential to ensure relevant, reliable results and effective preventive conservation outcomes.
For the past year, the Powerhouse has been building an Australian-based library of suitable material for the display of cultural heritage objects. It is an on-going project; to be shared with interested institutions and parties, whose input is in turn welcomed.
As such, you are invited to a day of practical training in Oddy testing using the techniques developed by Powerhouse conservators, based on methodology used by the AIC and British Museum.
Participants are asked to bring 1 or 2 samples per group. Powerhouse conservators will demonstrate
- sample preparation
- apparatus preparation
- coupon preparation
- loading and sealing samples
- weighing and data recording
- sample incubation
- the oven testing process
- how results are analysed, photographed and collated
The results and photographs of your samples will be emailed upon completion. If you are happy to share, your results will be uploaded to the PH database with credit given to the contributing institution/party.
