Members are warmly invited to join the AICCM NSW Branch for an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the Collection Care and Conservation Lab at the Australian Museum.

Project Conservator Kerry Etherington will share insights into the ongoing conservation of a remarkable four-metre taxidermy reef manta ray (Mobula alfredi) dating from 1868. As the holotype of its species—and one of only a handful of taxidermied fish of this scale known to survive—this specimen presents a truly unique conservation challenge.

With few precedents to guide the work, the project has required the development of bespoke tools and innovative techniques to stabilise, repair, and ultimately return the specimen to a displayable condition. Along the way, Kerry has uncovered unexpected discoveries, including a trove of historic materials that offer rare insight into nineteenth-century museum workshop practices.

The tour will continue with a visit to the scientific specimen preparation lab, where scientific specimen preparator Katrina McCormick will discuss the intricate craft of taxidermy—including the role of some of her more unusual “helpers”. Please note this is a working taxidermy lab which houses specimens in various states of preparation.

Key Details: The location, time and how to RSVP were circulated to NSW members via email on 27 March.
