Conference Delegate Tours for Illuminating the new: contemporary practice and issues in materials conservation - 2015 AICCM National Conference

Thursday afternoon tours

After the AGM conference delegates can choose one of three tours, each catering for different tastes. For the energetic, there’s a scramble up Mt Wellington; for the thirsty there’s a chance to imbibe; and for those who prefer to live vicariously an opportunity to visit the recreated Mawson’s Huts.

Tours are scheduled to provide plenty of preening time before the Awards and Cocktail Party at 6pm that evening.

All tours leave from the Baha'i Centre.

Tour one: Shene Estate

Spend an afternoon at this forgotten Van Diemen’s Land estate. The Shene estate custodians have spent almost 10 years conserving the beautiful sandstone buildings, gothic stables and convict built barns before turning their hand to art of distilling gin.

Tour the estate guided by the custodians the Kernke family, and sup on a  'Poltergiest', their latest gin.

Cost: $50 includes return transport from Hobart
Time: Allow 3 hours

Tour two: Mawsons Huts Replica Museum

In 2012 this replica museum opened on the Hobart waterfront adjacent to where Mawson and his men boarded the Aurora and set sail for the Great Southern Land a hundred years earlier.

Michelle Berry, a Mawson’s Huts Foundation expeditioner and conservator will talk about the original huts, the ill-fated Australasian Antarctic Expedition and the aims of the replica museum. She’ll provide unique insights into the many challenges of Antarctic conservation.

Cost: $15 with a limit of 20 delegates due to space restrictions.
Time: Allow 1.5 hours with an opportunity for delegates to stay longer.

Tour three: Kunanyi/Mt Wellington walk

For those of you who want fresh air, this one-hour scenic walk criss-crosses Kunanyi/Mt Wellington. Beginning at the Springs, the tracks winds up to Sphinx Rock for beautiful views over the foothills and Hobart.

Accompanied by an experienced tour guide delegates will learn about the mountain, its wildlife and unique ecosystem.

Please note: Kunanyi/Mt Wellington is prone to abrupt and extreme weather changes so wear sturdy walking boots, dress warmly in layers, and bring a waterproof jacket. If the weather becomes inclement the walk may be cancelled and refunds issued. You just never know when it’s going to snow in Hobart!

Cost: $17.00 includes return transport from Hobart
Time: The walk takes an hour (return) plus additional travel time. Allow 2 hours.
