Detlev Lueth is Assistant Director Preservation, State Office Services at the National Archives of Australia (NAA). He is passionate about the preservation and digitisation of cultural collections and has worked in this sector for over 35 years, including positions at the National Film and Sound Archive, Australian War Memorial, National Museum of Australia, and International Conservation Services.
Detlev obtained his formal qualifications from the University of Canberra in 1995, specialising in paper and photo conservation. He has extensive experience as a preservation administrator, providing leadership to the development of NAA’s strategic preservation and digitisation plans, standards, policies, and procedures, as well as high-level advice to Commonwealth agencies on the preservation and digitisation of Commonwealth records.
Detlev has a Master’s degree in Social Investment and Philanthropy from Swinburne University. He has served as a member of the Expert Assessment Panel for the National Library Community Heritage Grants as well as a member of the judging panel for the Victorian Government and Public Records Office of Victoria Local History Grants Program.
He was a founding member and coordinator of AICCM’s Photo Special Interest Group (PHOTON) from 1996 to 2005 and was named the 2004 AICCM Conservator of the Year for his contributions to the development of photo conservation in Australia.
Detlev represented the International Council on Archives (ICA) and the Council of Australasian Archives and Records Authorities (CAARA) on the Blue Shield Australia (BSA) Committee between 2007 and 2015.
He has a special interest in preventive conservation and the preservation and conservation of Papua New Guinea’s cultural heritage collections.
Detlev has been an active member of the conservation profession for over thirty years and has held numerous positions in AICCM on both state and national committees. When he is not busy managing preservation programs and projects, he can be found in his kitchen baking bread.
