Ruby Awburn is currently the Assistant Conservator of Paintings at the Queensland Art Gallery / Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA). They first worked with the QAGOMA Conservation team as an intern on student placement from the University of Melbourne and then later as a researcher on the ‘contemporary canvases’ material analysis project, which was presented at the 2020 conference Conserving Canvas at Yale University.
Ruby has a Masters of Cultural Materials Conservation from the Grimwade Centre for Cultural materials Conservation, University of Melbourne, specialising in paintings (2016). They undertook a further internship at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, before completing a 2-year fellowship at the Straus Centre for Conservation and Technical Studies at the Harvard Art Museums.
Their research interests include modern and contemporary painting materials and techniques, including working with living artists, and they are a passionate advocate for diversity and inclusion in museum spaces.
