The Alexander Turnbull Library sits within the Information and Knowledge Services branch, the Department’s epicentre of information management, culture and heritage. Our branch is all about collecting, storing and preserving important things that are precious to New Zealand.
We are seeking two experienced senior conservators to bring positive energy, expertise and enthusiasm to a team in transition. The Alexander Turnbull Library cares for the nation’s largest documentary collection of its type. By volume the collections are rich in works on paper, books (including rare books), photographs (prints and negatives) audio-visual and paintings.
It would be great to attract conservators who have experience across the disciplines of paper, books and photographs. What does “senior” mean? For us it means managing conservation technicians, project planning and delivery, a thorough approach to documentation (including reports), loans and exhibition preparation, and involvement in disaster preparedness and response.
What qualities would you have in spades? A great communicator, the ability to prioritise, someone who loves working with others (and can do), a team player with initiative. Naturally, as we are a major repository of tāonga you will have a good level of understanding of Mātauranga Māori and tikanga.
What does “a team in transition” mean? It means some longstanding team members have left or been seconded elsewhere, and we’re collaborating big time with our cousins in Archives NZ and Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision.
