OVERVIEW OF THE ROLE
The Conservator will assist the Objects section of the National Gallery Conservation Department to meet a wide variety of exciting projects in the exhibition, touring and lending program. These projects will involve preparing works of art for internal and external display, loan and travelling exhibition, including conservation documentation and minor and moderate treatments as appropriate and required. The role will be required to provide advice on display and transport requirements for a wide range of works of art being shared both nationally and to international venues. Maintenance of works of art whilst on display, including outdoor sculpture will also be required.

The Department employs conservators specialising in paper, paintings, objects, time-based media, textiles, and preventive conservation. The conservation team support all aspects of the care of the collection and works on loan to the National Gallery. All staff are required to implement preventive conservation principles, high level reporting of activities and to assist with disaster response and risk management for the Collection.

THE KEY DUTIES OF THE POSITION – WHAT WILL YOU DO?
In accordance with the APS 6 work level standards, you will have the following key responsibilities:
1. Carry out Conservation activities including the examination, condition reporting and treatment of Objects within the National Collection for exhibitions and loans with minimal supervision
2. Implementation of the Integrated Pest Management Plan and Quarantine procedures.
3. Undertake research and technical examination using analytical equipment
4. Liaise with curators, registrars and technical staff on the conservation needs of Objects within the National Collection, including display, packing, transport and storage.
5. Assist in the mentoring and guidance of less experienced staff, students and volunteers. Provide professional advice and training on care of the collection to staff and external stakeholders as required.
6. Contribute to departmental reporting, planning and development of policies
7. Implement and uphold the NGA Work Health & Safety (WHS) policies and assessment processes

ELIGIBILITY:
Citizenship – To be eligible for employment with the Gallery, you must be an Australian citizen.
Police Check – To be eligible for this role you must complete a police check.

Role specific mandatory qualifications certification and/or registrations include:
Tertiary Qualification in Conservation
An ability to work outside regular work hours and undertake disaster recovery is essential.
