The National Archives of Australia (the National Archives) can best be described as the memory of our nation, collecting, preserving and providing access to Australian Government records that reflect our history and identity.

The Assistant Director, Preservation and Photographic Digitisation, Canberra position is based in the National Archives’ Canberra Office at Mitchell, undertaking activities to ensure the long-term preservation of nationally significant Australian Government information.

The Preservation section is responsible for the preservation and long term accessibility of the most significant records of the Commonwealth in both physical and digital form. This position supports daily operations for the preservation of archival records in all formats and makes long term decisions to ensure that the collection will be available years from now regardless of technology.

This position manages the Preservation and Photographic Digitisation teams in Canberra, including human resources, budget and related financial management; ensuring that client and project work meets targets, deadlines and standards of service; and the selection, acquisition, maintenance and disposal of equipment and assets.

This role will also have responsibility for the development and application of policy and decision making in end to end processes which impacts the entire physical and digital collection, its authenticity, accessibility and long term preservation outcomes.

The position requires proven leadership capability and a strong strategic focus, the capacity to build and sustain positive relationships with a wide range of stakeholders. This position also requires the ability to identify priorities, pursue innovative approaches and achieve results.

Eligibility:  Applicants must be Australian citizens and be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance to Negative Vetting 1.
