Full title: Watch your back: the development of a new frame back system g a collaborative project between the National Gallery of Australia and Fini Frames

Abstract

The National Gallery of Australia (NGA) in conjunction with John Pandolfini of Fini Frames in Melbourne have collaborated to create a new aluminum frame backing system for works on paper at the NGA. This system was created to streamline the process of framing by reducing repetitive strain injury and speeding up the time it takes to frame a mounted work on paper. The new frame backing system replaces the gasket with a light aluminum frame that fits into the back of a standard or custom frame and is held in place with existing brackets, and four small clips. We have been refining and discussing the design of this frame backing system with the Frame Maker since its idea was first conceived in 2003. This new system was implemented for a very large exhibition of works on paper titled The story of Australian printmaking 1801-2005 held at the NGA in March 2007.
