Abstract

The Collections Council of Australia published the Conservation Survey 2006 Report almost exactly one year ago on 24 October 2006. The Conservation Survey 2006 study identified a shortage of suitably qualified conservation and preservation workers in Australia.

This paper describes the background to the development of Conservation Survey 2006, provides a summary of survey results, and comments on how the study has been received by stakeholder groups, ranging from collections sector professional bodies, right through to government departments of education / training and employment and industry skills councils.

The value of independent, formal studies, such as Conservation Survey 2006, is examined in respect of movable cultural heritage policy and program development in Australia, and leads to the suggestion that the AICCM build on earlier achievements now, by working closely with a range of bodies, to help create a New Deal for Australian conservation and preservation.
