The AICCM Paintings SIG symposium: revivify 2016, will be held 26 – 28 October 2016 at the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra.

Following a four year interval between our SIG specific meetings, this three day symposium of workshops, tours and presentations on materials, treatment and research in paintings conservation, aims to reconnect colleagues, ideas and collaborations within our field.

Wednesday 26th will host optional workshops and tours, with your choice of a morning and/or afternoon session. Transport will be arranged departing from the National Portrait Gallery, between sessions and returning to the National Portrait Gallery.

Click here for information on the revivify 2016 workshop/tour options.

If you wish to sign-up to any of the workshop/tour options, please do so by Friday 21st October. As some activities will have a maximum participant limit of 10, allocation will be first come first served. Participants need to have registered for the symposium in order to make their selection.

Following the day’s activities, attendees will be welcomed by Director Angus Trumble with drinks and canapés at the National Portrait Gallery at 4pm. After the Welcome Reception, please join us at the National Gallery of Australia, a very short walk away, for a public lecture ‘From the Chocolate Box to Jackson Pollock: The Materials and Techniques of Constable’s ‘six-footers’ c1819-1837’ given by our invited speaker Sarah Cove.

The program for Thursday 27th and Friday 28th includes over 25 diverse presentations from conservators and researchers around Australia, and renowned invited speakers from the UK, Sarah Cove and Alan Cummings.

Sarah will deliver her paper ‘Fit for Purpose: 30 years of the Constable Research Project’, which celebrates and raises awareness of her 30 years’ research on John Constable’s materials and techniques. The work is well known in the UK and the US and Sarah appeared in the BBC’s Fake or Fortune? program involving the authentication of potential Constable works. Biography and Abstract.

Alan’s presentation The View from the Edge: Reflections on conservation from a traveller among other disciplines’ will provide an outsider perspective of the challenges and opportunities facing conservation based on his experience of working across other vocational, professional and academic areas of activity. He aims to provoke lively discussion about the possibilities and limitations that the future holds for paintings conservation and conservators in the 21st century. Biography and Abstract

The last session on Thursday will close with attendee’s choice of either:

  • a bark painting mount workshop including samples of mounting methods with conservation framer Louise Bradley (private collections), conservators Lisa Nolan (Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory) and Beata Tworek-Matuszkiewicz (National Gallery of Australia), and designer maker Sean Booth who has worked on the National Museum of Australia collection
  • or a tour of paintings on exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery with Senior Curator Dr Christopher Chapman

At the close of proceedings on Thursday, take a short stroll through the historic Old Parliament House Rose Gardens (weather dependent) on our way to iconic Old Parliament House, our venue for the symposium dinner. Enjoy the night dining with colleagues in one of the original Members’ Dining Rooms with the splendid heritage-listed Member’s Bar.

Registration includes both day catering and event catering for attendees; including tea breaks and lunches in addition to the Welcome Reception and Symposium Dinner. Please indicate if you will be attending these events when you register. Additional dinner tickets may be purchased for guests.

A very big thank you to our generous partners: the National Portrait Gallery, Conservation by Design/TruVue and Schott. Please click on their logo below to visit their websites.
