Digital print workshops with Daniel Burge from IPI

The AICCM Book & Paper and Photon Special Interest Groups are very pleased to announce that senior research scientist Daniel Burge from the Image Permanence Institute (IPI) will travel to Melbourne in November to present two workshops and a seminar on digital print preservation.

Held in conjunction with the AICCM 10th Book, Paper and Photographic Materials Symposium, the two-and-a-half day workshop (held twice) looks at the history, technology and preservation of digital prints close-up and in depth.

The workshop will present an overview of the history, technologies, and materials used in digital printing to provide the knowledge and skills needed to identify and preserve the most common digital print types. Participants will learn through lecture, demonstration, print examination, hands-on exercises, and group discussion. They will develop a good understanding of the varieties of digital print materials and formats (including inks and toners) as well as the unique vulnerabilities of each type. Other topics to be covered include the history of digital printing, identification methods and recommended best practices for their care—including emergency response strategies for water-damaged prints.

The workshop will end with a visit to the National Gallery of Victoria print collection to view and discuss a selection of digitally printed materials.

Each workshop is limited to fifteen participants and is intended for all who need specialist knowledge and skills in order to identify and care for these modern objects.

The first workshop will begin in the afternoon of Friday 23 November and will run over the weekend. The repeat workshop begins the following week on Tuesday 27 November. The cost of the workshop is $770 for AICCM members and $990 for non-members. The registration fee includes about $200 worth of IPI publications and equipment, including a copy of the Atlas of Water Damage and print sample kits.

Daniel will also present a seminar on the morning of Friday 23 November for those only in need of a broad summary of the issues involved with digital print collection care. (If you are attending a workshop you don't also need to attend the seminar). Topics to be covered will include definition of the term ‘digital print’, the history and technologies of the most common digital printers, the variety of possible formats, likely forms of deterioration, general recommendations for care, as well as suggested naming conventions and descriptive terminology for cataloguing and other records. The seminar costs $110.
