Australian conservators seek to protect Iraqi treasures
Monday, 10 March 2003 06:49
Australian conservators are calling on Australian, British and American leaders to form an international taskforce to protect ancient monuments, archaeological sites and museum collections in the event of a war with Iraq.
The call comes on the eve of a national training summit at the National Museum of Australia – organised by the Australian Institute for Conservation of Cultural Materials Inc (AICCM) – following last year’s closure of Australia’s premier conservation training course at the University of Canberra. AICCM is the peak body industry representing the conservation profession in Australia.
The outcomes of a national summit on conservation issues will be referred to Australia’s Cultural Minister’s Council (CMC) in a bid to define new goals for heritage protection.
The summit was organised by The Australian Institute for the Conservation of Cultural Materials (AICCM) in response to last year’s closure of Australia’s premier conservation training course at the University of Canberra.
