The Book and Paper Special Interest Group represents conservators who preserve paper based cultural materials including books, artworks on paper (such as prints, drawings and watercolours), archives, manuscripts, maps and plans. Book, paper and photographs conservation today can also encompass a broad range of associated materials including film, sound and new media.
This involves research and scientific analysis to establish the history and chemistry of each material and their deterioration mechanisms. The process of conservation requires implementing conservation methods associated with appropriate environmental controls, storage methods, approaches to framing, digitisation, and the treatment of individual items for the purpose of repair and stabilisation.
In conjunction with Photon, the Photographic Materials SIG, we hold a symposium every two years and workshops from time to time.
Postprints of past symposiums are available for sale. Have a look!
In May this year we held On Paper? The 8th AICCM Book, Paper and Photographic Materials Symposium at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
With an interesting range of guest speakers, the event is open to the general public and will be attended by conservators, researchers, historians and technical specialists.
Thanks to our generous sponsors, Archival Survival and Tru Vue who both supported a student registration at the symposium.
